Special activities are on going and year round on the ranch. Students are allowed
all their earned activities, plus several activities that are unique to our area.
Some of these activities include snow tubing, water skiing, snow skiing, swimming,
ice skating, boating, ice hockey, and horseback riding.
In addition to these activities, our students are involved in helping with ranch
responsibilities. Some of these include:
Lambing: In early spring, approximately 1500 ewes (female sheep) give birth to lambs.
Students are given the opportunity to help staff and ranch owners with this process. The
students are also responsible for bottle feeding and raising the "bum" or abandoned
lambs. It is an incredible learning opportunity for the students. When students
graduate, this is often one of the activities they report as having helped them
the most in working through their problems.
Sheep Trail: Every spring and fall, students have the opportunity to participate on the Sheep
Trail. This is when the sheep are pushed to and from their summer pasture. The
trail is about 90 miles long and moving the sheep can take from 2-4 weeks. During
that time, students have the opportunity to sleep on the trail and cook over an
open fire. Students who have proven they are responsible and can handle a horse
are able to ride while the other students follow behind the herd on foot. This
is one of the favorite activities done on the ranch. Students even ask if they
can come back and participate in the Trail after they leave the school!!
Caring for animals: Students learn teamwork as they work together to perform tasks necessary when
working with the sheep, cows, and horses on the ranch. Often the jobs are difficult
and dirty but the students learn to appreciate work, the animals, and each other!
Service Projects: The students have an opportunity for community service by being involved in the
Adopt-A-Highway program where they participate in cleaning up a stretch of local
highway. They also assist with Bear Lake beach litter pick up once a year.
