Dogs Help Blind People!
By Jessica Driscall

Buddy was a German Shepherd.  She was the first seeing eye dog.  Buddy whose name was changed from Kiss, lived in Fortunate Fields.  Fortunate fields is in the Swiss Alps.

Dorthy was their owner.  She was an American that lived in the Swiss Alps.  She trained and taught dogs.

Gayla and Kiss wouldn’t become police or rescue dogs.  They were going to be something else.  Jake Humphrey went to Germany to learn how to train them.

Buddy learned 5 simple commands.  They were sit, come, right, left, forward.  Morris Frank met Buddy for the first time and Buddy would have to obey him.  Morris, who was blind, had to learn about lots of stuff like to brush her coat, feed her, and put [her] harness on.  Morris and Buddy were pals and Morris had to trust.  Morris got his hair cut for the very first time with Buddy.  Buddy gave him freedom.  Morris and Buddy came to America on a ship and Morris dropped his wallet and Morris said go get it.  Buddy picked it up and went to his room.  And Buddy put it on his chest.  Morris said good girl to Buddy and patted [her] on her head.  Morris moved to Nashville .  He had lots of freedom.  He sold insurance door to door.

Lots of newspapers printed articles about Buddy and Morrris.  People wanted to know when the seeing eye [school] will open.

The first two students began their lessons on February, 1929.  Morris and Buddy moved to New Jersey in the fall in 1936.  The new school was to open near Morristown at the end of the year.

In October of 1936, Buddy turned ten and had a birthday and had a cake.  In 1938 Buddy had to have an operation.  It did not heal her and she died.  After Buddy died Morris got another and called her Buddy 2 and got four more seeing eye dogs.

Today the seeing eye [school] in Morristown , New Jersey matches about 300 blind people with its specially trained dogs.

Jessica invited Chad and his seeing eye dog, Huck to visit the class when she gave her report.
